Stop Wasting Money on Facebook Ads (Do This Instead)

Running Facebook or Google ads for your small business but not getting results? You're probably making these common mistakes that burn through your budget.

Every month, lakhs of small business owners in India pour money into Facebook and Google ads hoping for customers. Most of them get nothing back.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: the problem isn’t that ads don’t work. The problem is how you’re running them.

You’re boosting posts instead of running proper ads

This is the #1 money burner. Facebook shows you that “Boost Post” button every time you upload something. It’s tempting — just pay ₹500 and get more “reach.”

But reach is not customers. Getting 10,000 people to scroll past your post is worthless if none of them need what you sell.

Proper ads let you target:

  • People in your specific area (not all of India)
  • People who are actively looking for your service
  • People of a specific age/interest group

Boosted posts just spray your content at random people. It’s like throwing pamphlets from a helicopter.

Your ad goes to your homepage (or worse, your Facebook page)

Someone clicks your ad. Where do they land?

If the answer is “my homepage” or “my Facebook page” — you’re wasting money. These are dead ends. The person has to figure out what to do next, and most won’t bother.

Every ad should lead to a specific page that does ONE thing:

  • Collects their phone number
  • Gets them to WhatsApp you
  • Shows them the exact product/service the ad mentioned

This page should match what the ad promised. If your ad says “50% off AC servicing,” the landing page better be about AC servicing with a way to book immediately.

You’re targeting “all of India” or “everyone age 18-65”

If you run a tailoring shop in Malad, why are you showing ads to people in Chennai?

If you sell B2B industrial supplies, why are you targeting 18-year-old college students?

Narrow your targeting ruthlessly:

  • Pick your city only (or even specific areas within your city)
  • Pick the age group that actually buys from you
  • Pick interests related to your service

A ₹1,000 ad shown to 200 relevant people will always beat a ₹5,000 ad shown to 50,000 irrelevant people.

You have no way to track what’s working

Most SMB owners running ads can’t answer this simple question: “Of the 10 calls you got this week, how many came from ads?”

If you can’t track it, you can’t improve it. You’re just guessing.

At minimum, use:

  • A separate phone number or WhatsApp number for ads
  • UTM parameters in your ad links (ask your ad manager about this)
  • Google Analytics on your website

What to do instead of ads (when your budget is small)

If your monthly ad budget is less than ₹10,000, here’s the harsh truth: you probably shouldn’t be running ads at all. Not yet.

Instead, invest that money and time in:

  1. Google Business Profile optimization (free, long-term results)
  2. Getting customer reviews (free, builds trust)
  3. WhatsApp Business with a proper catalog (free)
  4. Local partnerships with complementary businesses

These build a foundation. Once you’re getting steady organic leads, THEN amplify with ads.
