Why Your Website Isn't Getting You Customers
You spent money on a website. It looks decent. But your phone isn't ringing. Here's what's actually going wrong — and it's probably not what you think.
You built a website. Or you paid someone to build it. Maybe it cost ₹5,000, maybe ₹50,000. It’s online, it loads, it has your phone number somewhere on it.
But nobody calls.
You’re not alone. This is the number one complaint we hear from small business owners across India. Let’s break down why this happens.
The “brochure” problem
Most small business websites in India are built like digital brochures — a homepage, an “About Us” page, a “Services” page, and a “Contact” page. That’s it.
Here’s the thing: nobody reads brochures. When was the last time you picked up a pamphlet and called a business from it? Probably never.
Your website needs to answer ONE question instantly: “Can this business solve MY problem?”
If a visitor has to dig through your site to figure that out, they’re gone in 3 seconds. They’ll go to your competitor who makes it obvious.
Your phone number is buried
We audit dozens of SMB websites every week. The most common issue? The phone number or WhatsApp link is either:
- Hidden in the footer
- On a separate “Contact” page (that nobody visits)
- Written in tiny text
- Not clickable on mobile (so people can’t tap to call)
Fix this first. Your phone number or WhatsApp link should be visible without scrolling, especially on mobile. Make it a button. Make it big. Make it say something like “Call now for free consultation” instead of just a number.
It’s not mobile-friendly (even if you think it is)
Here’s a stat that matters: over 75% of Indian internet users browse on their phones. Not laptops. Not desktops. Phones.
If your website looks weird on a phone — if the text is too small, buttons are too close together, or things overflow off-screen — you’re losing three out of four potential customers.
Open your website on your phone right now. Try to do the ONE thing a customer would do (call you, message you, find your address). If it takes more than 5 seconds or more than 2 taps, it’s broken.
No reason to trust you
When someone lands on your website for the first time, they’re thinking: “Is this real? Can I trust these people?”
Your website needs proof:
- Photos of your actual work/shop/team (not stock images)
- Testimonials from real customers (with names, not “Mr. A from Delhi”)
- Your registration details or certifications (subtly — in the footer or about page)
- Your location (Google Maps embed helps)
Without these, you’re just another faceless website that could be a scam for all they know.
What to do about it
You don’t need to rebuild your entire website. Start with these three changes:
- Put your WhatsApp/phone button at the top of every page — big, green, clickable
- Open your site on your phone and fix anything that’s hard to use
- Add one real testimonial with a name and what you did for them
These three changes alone can double your incoming calls. We’ve seen it happen.
